The story follows Anika [ah-NEE-ka], a young girl, who after losing her deeply loved Grandfather to a heart attack, feels abandoned and ill-equipped to deal with being bullied at school and her Mother’s substance abuse. GENIUS is a new play about a young person struggling to make the right choices when circumstances threaten to jeopardize her future. Using original music composed by Richard Trotman, of Kool’s Bazaar, her struggle is explored through song, dance and drama. Drawing on history as the backdrop, the story points out that Anika’s family has been struggling for 300 years. Then in an imaginative overlay, Anika and her family discover how genius is tied to inner-self and faith. GENIUS…is empowering and a must see for all young people.

ACT_GeniusFlyer_FrontFINALThe creative team for this original ACT production is extraordinaire. The impressive dance routines are choreographed by Jeffrey Page and supported by Nick Owens as the assistant choreographer. In addition to Asante, Page and Trotman, GENIUS includes the talents of Kim Kenny as co-lyricist and vocal coach. We round out the team with Daniel Martin, who played Tom Robinson in IRT’s “To Kill A Mocking Bird”, as the assistant director. Although the cast is deep in rehearsal, time is still spent in forum discussion about the issues reflected in the play.

Why GENIUS, Why now? ACT is ready to engage an ACT alum who now boasts a very successful career as a choreographer. Page recently choreographed the Broadway show “Violet” and also directed “Memphis” in Japan. Through his guidance, we introduce ACT Academy students to an exclusive, competitive, Broadway-like experience that will last a lifetime.

GENIUS…highly entertaining…culturally relevant…exceeds all expectations!
